Bloody crime wave in Arab community: Six murdered in 24 hours

A deadly car bombing in Jaffa left one man dead and his young son seriously wounded.

A surge in deadly violence within Israel’s Arab community has intensified concerns over organized crime, with six people killed in separate incidents over a 24-hour period in what authorities believe are gang-related slayings.

The latest killing occurred in the early hours of Monday morning, when a 30-year-old man was shot to death while sitting in his car in the northern Arab town of Yafia, near Nazareth. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. Israeli media had not publicly identified the victim by name as of Monday.

His death marked the sixth homicide involving members of Israel’s Arab community in just one day, continuing a wave of violence that has plagued the sector for years. Police believe the killings are linked primarily to organized crime, longstanding family feuds and disputes between rival criminal organizations.

Sunday alone saw a string of deadly attacks, including multiple shootings and at least one car bombing, a method of assassination frequently associated with organized crime in Israel.

The car bombing, which took place in Jaffa, south of Tel Aviv, killed the driver of the vehicle. The victim’s six-year-old son, who was also inside the car when the blast occurred, was wounded and transported for medical treatment.

Speaking to the Hebrew-language daily Haaretz, a law enforcement source argued that lenient sentencing policies have failed to deter organized crime.

According to the source, courts often impose relatively light sentences even for serious offenses, while many cases never result in convictions because witnesses fear retaliation if they testify.

“Deterrence is collapsing, it no longer exists. There is nothing that deters them: not the police, not the ridiculous punishment of the courts, and not anyone else,” the source said.

The official added that, under the current circumstances, “criminals allow themselves to do whatever they want, at whatever time they want, and to whoever they want.”

According to the Abraham Initiatives, an organization that monitors violence in Israel’s Arab community, at least 142 Arab citizens have been killed in homicides since the beginning of the year, underscoring the scale of the ongoing crisis.

Just 15 percent of murders in the Arab community are solved by police, according to Knesset data. Investigators face challenges bringing perpetrators to justice due to a culture of silence and secrecy within the Arab community that discourages cooperation with law enforcement.
