Body returned to Israel identified as hostage Tal Chaimi

Israel says that the latest body returned by Hamas belongs to a resident of Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak who was murdered while defending his hometown on October 7th, 2023.

The body transferred by Hamas to Israel overnight has been positively identified as belonging to Tal Chaimi, a resident of Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak and head of the town’s emergency response squad who was murdered by Hamas terrorists who attacked the town on the morning of October 7th, 2023.

In a statement released Tuesday morning, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office announced that the National Center for Forensic Medicine had completed the identification process for the remains transferred to Israel by Hamas via the International Committee of the Red Cross Monday night.

“IDF representatives informed the family of hostage Sgt.-Major Tal Chaimi, of blessed memory, that their loved one had been returned to Israel and his identification had been completed,” the PMO said.

“The Government of Israel shares in the deep sorrow of the Haimi family and all the families of the deceased hostages.”

Chaimi was 41 at the time of his murder, and he is survived by his wife, four children, his father, and a sister.

Chaimi’s wife, Ela, was pregnant at the time of his murder and abduction. In May of 2024, she gave birth to the couple’s fourth child.

The grandson of cofounders of Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak, Chaimi commanded the town’s emergency response team, and led its attempt to fend off terrorists who invaded Nir Yitzhak on October 7th, 2023.

During the ensuing gun battle, Chaimi and his unit partner Lior Rudaeff were both murdered by Hamas terrorists. Their bodies were both taken captive and held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Israeli security officials officially determined on December 13th, 2023 that Chaimi was killed on October 7th, and his family held a funeral service for him, prior to the return of his body.

“Einav, Nir and Udi, your father was killed doing what he believed in more than anything – he protected us and the kibbutz, a kibbutz where he grew up and raised a family,” Ela said during the funeral. “He didn’t hesitate for a moment when he left the house that morning.”
