French President Macron sues Candace Owens for alleging his wife was born a man

The Macrons allege that Owens’ actions were financially and reputationally motivated, designed to grow her platform, solicit donations, and boost her personal brand at their expense.

French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, have filed a 22-count defamation lawsuit in Delaware against conservative commentator Candace Owens, accusing her of spreading false claims that Brigitte Macron was born a man.

According to the complaint, Owens launched a year-long campaign aimed at discrediting the couple, beginning in March 2024 with a YouTube video titled “Is France’s First Lady a Man?”

The video, which Owens promoted as “likely the biggest scandal in political history,” was followed by a multi-part series called “Becoming Brigitte.”

The content was widely distributed across her social media platforms and monetized through ads and merchandise.

The lawsuit states Owens ignored three formal retraction demands sent between December 2024 and July 2025.

Instead, she escalated her campaign with “outlandish, defamatory, and far-fetched fictions,” according to the filing.

“These claims are demonstrably false, and Owens knew they were false when she published them,” the complaint adds. “Yet, she published them anyway. And the reason is clear: it is not the pursuit of truth, but the pursuit of fame.”

The Macrons allege that Owens’ actions were financially and reputationally motivated, designed to grow her platform, solicit donations, and boost her personal brand at their expense.

“Owens has used this false statement to promote her independent platform, gain notoriety, and make money,” the lawsuit claims.

In a statement, the couple said, “Ms. Owens’ campaign of defamation was plainly designed to harass and cause pain to us and our families and to garner attention and notoriety… It is our earnest hope that this lawsuit will set the record straight and end this campaign of defamation once and for all.”

Owens responded to the suit on Instagram, writing, “I will be coming for this wig today. Stay tuned.”

A spokesperson for Owens called the lawsuit an attack on press freedom, stating, “This is a foreign government attacking the First Amendment rights of an American independent journalist.”

The lawsuit names Owens, her media company, and her website operator as defendants.
