In violation of the October 10 ceasefire, Hamas terrorists operating in the southern Gaza Strip attacked Israeli forces, prompting the IDF to launch a series of airstrikes against Hamas forces in Gaza, according to multiple reports.
The Hamas attack Sunday morning was reported in the city of Rafah and involved anti-tank missiles fired at an Israeli armored vehicle, followed by heavy exchanges of gunfire.
Israeli media outlets reported that Hamas snipers were also involved in the attack.
In addition, there were reports of heavy mortar fire by Gaza terrorists on Israeli forces stationed at the Kerem Shalom border crossing.
According to Palestinian reports, Israeli naval vessels responded by opening fire on Hamas forces, with Israeli Air Force airstrikes also reported.
The incident comes just days after Hamas terrorists attacked IDF soldiers outside of Rafah, ambushing the IDF force from a terror tunnel.
According to the IDF, no Israeli security personnel were wounded in the attack.
In a separate incident Sunday, Hamas terrorists attempted to infiltrate across the Yellow Line into IDF-controlled territory in the Jabalya area of northern Gaza, Israel’s Channel 14 reported.
IDF soldiers opened fire and killed two terrorists; no Israeli forces were reported injured.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by telephone Sunday morning with Defense Minister Israel Katz (Likud) and senior IDF officials to weigh Israel’s response to the latest ceasefire violations by Hamas.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir (Otzma Yehudit), a critic of the ceasefire, called for an immediate resumption of the IDF operation in Gaza.
“I call on the prime minister to order the IDF to fully resume hostilities at full force in the Gaza Strip,” Ben-Gvir said. “The false belief that Hamas will suddenly change or that it will adhere to the deal it signed have, as expected, turned out to be dangerous to our security.”
“This Nazi terror organization needs to be annihilated completely, and the sooner the better.”
The Hamas attacks on IDF forces Sunday morning came amid ongoing efforts by the Gaza terror organization to crush rival groups.
Over the weekend, Hamas forces clashed with militiamen from the Abu Shabab group in southern Gaza.
Last week, the US warned Hamas not to target its opponents inside of the Gaza Strip, following the killings of members of the Dughmush clan in Gaza City.
While President Donald Trump initially condoned the killings, he later reversed course, warning Hamas that such attacks jeopardized the ceasefire.
“If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not the Deal, we will have no choice but to go in and kill them,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account on Thursday. “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
