Iran wants a nuclear deal ‘very badly’ – Trump

During meeting with Saudi Crown Prince, Trump claims Tehran is desperate for a deal with the US that could provide sanctions relief.

Iran is increasingly desperate to negotiate a new nuclear deal with the United States, President Donald Trump said on Tuesday, adding that he would welcome a renewal of talks.

Speaking at a joint press conference at the White House alongside Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trump lamented that his administration’s efforts to reach an agreement with Tehran replacing the 2015 deal had failed, culminating in the 12-day war between Israel and Iran.

“That didn’t work out,” Trump admitted.

Nearly five months after the end of the war and after US warplanes bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities, however, the president believes the time is now ripe for a resumption of talks, claiming that Tehran “very badly” needs a deal leading to sanctions relief.

“Iran does want to make a deal,” Trump said. “I think they very badly want to make a deal. I am totally open to it, and we’re talking to them, and we start a process.”

“It would be a nice thing to have a deal with Iran.”

Trump also expressed optimism regarding the prospects for rebooting nuclear talks.

“Something will happen there. But they would very much like, I mean, they may say something else, but they would very much like to have a deal.”

Crown Prince bin Salman said during the press conference that Riyadh will be working behind the scenes to facilitate a rapprochement between Tehran and Washington.

“I will be working closely together on the issue, and we will do our best to help to reach a deal between America and Iran,” bin Salman said.

“We believe it’s good for Iran’s future to have a good deal that would satisfy the region and the world. So we will do our best to see that they happen.”
