Iranian-backed terror groups target Israeli embassies – report

Israel reportedly ratcheting up security at embassies around the world amid fears Iran may use terrorist proxies to attack.

Israel believes Iran may be planning to attack Israeli diplomatic missions around the world in the event that the US strikes the Islamic Republic, an Israeli official told Saudi television on Monday.

Speaking with Al-Hadath, the Israeli official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Israel has received multiple warnings of planned attacks on a number of embassies by terrorist proxy groups working on behalf of Tehran.

Israel has elevated security at a number of diplomatic facilities across three continents, he added, but said that the threats were so grave that Jerusalem is considering evacuating some embassies.

“We may evacuate several of our embassies,” the official said. “We have raised the readiness threshold at our embassies in Europe, the Far East, and Latin America.”

“There are warnings about the intent of elements linked to Iran to carry out terrorist attacks against our interests abroad.”

“We have asked former security personnel and former senior officials to return to the country as soon as possible.”

The threat posed to Israeli embassies in the event of a war with Iran mirrors the threat facing American diplomatic facilities.

Multiple security officials from the United States and other Western countries told The New York Times that they estimate that Iran could use its terrorist proxies to attack American targets across Europe and the Middle East.

The officials emphasized that there are no specific threats at this time but noted higher-than-usual levels of communication on terrorist channels, signaling Iranian-backed terror cells may be preparing for a number of attacks.

One senior official said that the US State Department is tracking “a lot” of activity linked to Iranian-backed groups.
