Iranian president Pezeshkian reportedly resigns, citing IRGC control over state decision-making.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has reportedly submitted his resignation to the Office of the Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, after concluding that his administration could no longer function effectively as authority increasingly shifted to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), according to Iran International.

The opposition news outlet reported that Pezeshkian asked to leave office immediately, arguing that he had been excluded from major policy decisions and was no longer able to carry out the responsibilities assigned to his position under Iran’s governing system.

Neither Iranian authorities nor major international wire services had confirmed the report, and there was no immediate indication that Mojtaba Khamenei had accepted the resignation.

According to Iran International, Pezeshkian cited the expanding role of the IRGC in state affairs and said key decisions were being made outside the civilian government.

The outlet reported that the growing influence of the military organization had left the administration unable to advance diplomatic initiatives or complete planned changes to the cabinet.

The report described what it said was an ongoing transfer of authority away from elected institutions and toward senior IRGC officials and the Supreme Leader.

Executive decisions were increasingly blocked, while diplomatic efforts pursued by the president’s office were sidelined.

The IRGC has gradually reduced presidential authority and taken effective control over significant sectors of government activity, leaving Pezeshkian’s administration in what sources described as a political and executive impasse.

The IRGC’s influence extends beyond security matters. According to The Jerusalem Post, the organization controls between 20% and 40% of Iran’s economy. \

The group oversees much of the country’s oil-export network through sanctions-evasion mechanisms that include “dark fleet” oil tankers and smuggling routes, directing revenue toward its military-industrial activities, the Jerusalem Post reported.

The Council on Foreign Relations reported that the IRGC also maintains an extensive domestic security and intelligence apparatus, including the Basij militia, which monitors dissent and helps ensure that only IRGC-aligned candidates can attain significant political influence.

The reported resignation has not been independently confirmed.
