A teenager with ties to the Islamic State in Syria (ISIS) terror organization has been arrested in France over plots to attack the Israeli and American embassies in Paris among other potential targets.
On Friday, French authorities took a 17-year-old resident of the Sarthe region into custody after the suspect fled his parents’ home, leading to a pursuit that left him injured.
Sources with direct knowledge of the case told AFP on Saturday that the suspect swore allegiance to ISIS and was arrested after investigators learned of his plans to attack multiple targets in France.
The would-be terrorist reportedly drafted a list of potential targets, including schools in the city of Le Mans, French interior ministry buildings, a number of government offices in Paris, and the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
In addition, the suspect is said to have plotted attacks on multiple embassies in the French capital city, including the Israeli embassy, the American embassy, and the British embassy.
The suspect is also said to have plotted to attack the headquarters of media outlets in France.
Evidence seized at the suspect’s parents’ home also included a list of quantities of liquid materials, measured in liters — apparently needed for producing explosive materials, hinting at the suspect’s plans for bombing the targets.
One source cited in the AFP report said that the suspect confessed to plotting numerous attacks but claimed that he had not yet made any practical preparations to carry them out, saying that the scale of his planned attacks had prevented him from making progress thus far.
