Israel fires warning shot at Syrian military position

The Israeli action was sent to underline that Jerusalem will not tolerate  Syrian breaches of the 1974 ceasefire agreement on the Golan Heights.

An IDF tank on Saturday fired a round at a Syrian military position as a “warning shot” after the Syrian military conducted construction inside the buffer zone, adjacent to Israel’s border.

The IDF stated that the Syrian fortification operation was in violation the 1974 ceasefire agreement after it used heavy tools to reinforce a military post in the demilitarized zone between the countries.

The agreement “prohibits the entry of heavy construction tools or military vehicles into the demilitarized zone,” the IDF said.

There were no reports of Syrian casualties.

The IDF also complained to the United Nations (UN) peacekeeper force stationed in the area.

This incident is the latest in several  Syrian violations which have heightened tensions on Israel’s border with Syria.

The latest incident also comes amid growing tensions over Iran’s expansionism and influence in Syria and across the region.

Iran has been working to establish a logistical land supply line from Iran, through Syria and Iraq, to the Hezbollah terror group, its proxy in Lebanon. Israel fears that Iran will use its presence in Syria to establish another front against the Jewish state.

Israeli leaders have repeatedly vowed to operate to ensure the country’s security interests are maintained.
