Report: Trump preparing for peace talks with Iran

President Trump’s top advisers are reportedly laying the groundwork for possible negotiations with Iran to end the current war.

The Trump administration is preparing for possible peace talks with Iran, according to a report published by Axios over the weekend, as the White House mulls “winding down” the conflict with Iran even before the Strait of Hormuz is reopened to global shipping.

The report, which cited a US official and a source with knowledge of the preparations, said that senior advisers to President Donald Trump have begun laying the groundwork for possible diplomatic negotiations with Iran even as fighting in Iran is expected to continue in the short term.

Trump has reportedly tapped his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Steve Witkoff, the White House’s special envoy to the Middle East, to lead the planning effort.

The two are said to be sketching out possible scenarios for peace talks and exploring what a future peace agreement with Iran would look like, given various possible outcomes on the battlefield.

The preparations also include drafting a list of demands for peace talks, with the White House expected to insist on sweeping concessions from Iran regarding its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, as well as an end to support for Tehran’s terrorist proxies.

Specifically, according to the US official cited by Axios, the US is likely to demand Iran agree to zero uranium enrichment, a total cessation of missile development and production for at least five years, the decommissioning of three of Iran’s largest nuclear facilities, and a total prohibition on financing for Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis.

The US is considering offering to unfreeze Iranian assets as an incentive to bring Iran to the negotiating table, the report said.

On Saturday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian sketched out, in rough terms, Iran’s conditions for ending the current conflict.

In addition to an “immediate cessation” of hostilities, Pezeshkian demanded assurances that the US and Israel would not strike Iran again.

Iran is expected to also demand compensation for damages suffered during the conflict, the report said.
