Republican senator fears Iran deal will be ‘a nightmare for Israel’

GOP senators argued the emerging deal could undermine American influence in the Middle East.

Sen. Lindsey Graham warned that an emerging agreement between the United States and Iran could create a disastrous scenario for Israel and weaken American influence in the Middle East.

Amid social media posts by President Donald Trump and multiple media reports suggesting that Washington and Tehran were nearing a deal, Graham expressed deep concern about the potential agreement.

The proposal would reportedly extend the ceasefire between the United States and Iran by another 60 days while reopening the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping.

“If a deal is struck to end the Iranian conflict because it is believed that the Strait of Hormuz cannot be protected from Iranian terrorism and Iran still possesses the capability to destroy major Gulf oil infrastructure, then Iran will be perceived as being a dominant force requiring a diplomatic solution,” Graham wrote on X.

“This combination of Iran being perceived as having the ability to terrorize the Strait in perpetuity and the ability to inflict massive damage to Gulf oil infrastructure is a major shift in the balance of power in the region and over time will be a nightmare for Israel,” he added.

Sen. Ted Cruz echoed Graham’s concerns in a separate post on X, warning that the deal could ultimately strengthen the Iranian regime despite recent military action against Tehran.

“President Trump’s decision to strike Iran was the most consequential decision of his second term. He was right to do so, and we achieved extraordinary military results,” Cruz wrote.

“If the result of all that is to be an Iranian regime — still run by Islamists who chant ‘death to America’ — now receiving billions of dollars, being able to enrich uranium and develop nuclear weapons, and having effective control over the Strait of Hormuz, then that outcome would be a disastrous mistake,” he stressed.
