The United States uncovered Iranian efforts to rebuild its uranium enrichment program at a new location, President Donald Trump has claimed, warning the Islamic Republic’s supreme leader that he should “be very worried” about tensions with the US.
On Wednesday, Trump spoke with NBC News about the ongoing tensions with Iran and efforts to reach a diplomatic solution.
When asked whether Ayatollah Ali Khamenei should be concerned, the president responded in the affirmative.
“I would say he should be very worried, yeah,” Trump said, adding that Iran has agreed to engage in direct talks with the US.
“He should be. As you know, they’re negotiating with us.”
Trump rejected criticism from Iranian dissidents who argued that the failure of the US to intervene militarily thus far constituted an abandonment of the protest movement.
“Well, we’ve had their back,” Trump responded. “We were with them. And look, that country is a mess right now because of us. We went in. We wiped out their nuclear program.”
The president accused Iran of preparing to establish a new uranium enrichment facility, adding that his administration warned Tehran not to move forward with the plan.
“They were thinking about starting a new site in a different part of the country. We found out about it. I said, ‘You do that, we’re going to do really bad things to you.'”
The US, Trump continued, has removed the threat of nuclear blackmail by Tehran, diminishing Iranian deterrence.
“We have peace in the Middle East. If I hadn’t wiped out their nuclear program, if we hadn’t wiped out that nuclear program, we would not have peace in the Middle East, because the Arab countries would never have been able to do it. They were very afraid of Iran. They’re not afraid of Iran anymore.”
