The Trump administration is considering additional federal funding cuts to Harvard University, more than doubling the amount of government grant dollars taken away from the Ivy League institution this spring.
On Monday, President Donald Trump issued a pair of statements on his Truth Social account, lambasting Harvard while revealing that he is mulling plans to shift billions in federal funds from Harvard to trade schools.
Trump linked the possible new cuts to accusations against school administrators that they have failed to take necessary action to combat antisemitism on campus, calling Harvard “very antisemitic.”
“I am considering taking Three Billion Dollars of Grant Money away from a very antisemitic Harvard and giving it to TRADE SCHOOLS all across our land. What a great investment that would be for the USA, and so badly needed!!!”
If implemented, the $3 billion cut would more than double the amount of federal funding cut this month, after the administration suspended $2.2 billion in funding in early May.
Harvard has since filed a lawsuit in a federal district court to overturn the funding freeze.
Prior to the cuts, Harvard received $8.7 billion in federal grants and another $256 million in contracts with federal agencies.
Beginning this March, the administration has placed the entire $9 billion in federal funding of Harvard under review, while insisting the college agree to a number of reforms to ensure compliance with civil rights statutes, as well as the White House’s effort to ban controversial Divestment, Equity, and Inclusion programs.
In a follow-up post on Monday, Trump took aim at Harvard’s refusal to cooperate with federal authorities in identifying foreign students who took part in illegal campus activities or unauthorized protests – a move which led the administration to strip foreign students at Harvard of their visas.
The administration is now waiting on school administrators to list students with study visas, who will now be required to register for alternative visas – or return to their countries of origin.
“We are still waiting for the Foreign Student Lists from Harvard so that we can determine, after a ridiculous expenditure of BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, how many radicalized lunatics, troublemakers all, should not be let back into our Country.”
“Harvard is very slow in the presentation of these documents, and probably for good reason! The best thing Harvard has going for it is that they have shopped around and found the absolute best Judge (for them!) – But have no fear, the Government will, in the end, WIN!” wrote the president.
