A New York City school bus driver was suspended after holding children “captive” while engaging in a religious tirade that blamed the Jews for Jesus’s death.
Outraged parents said that the children, who are students at Brooklyn Prospect International Elementary School, were over 30 minutes late to school, as the driver held the students on the bus and rambled about the Jews’ role in Jesus’s execution.
“The only one who can deliver you isn’t religion, it’s Jesus,” the bus driver told the children, according to parents who spoke to the New York Post newspaper.
“Yes, [Jesus] was a Jew and basically Jews – his own kind – killed him,” the driver allegedly said.
“They basically killed him because he said he was the son of God,” the driver added. “These were religious leaders who killed him.”
There was at least one Jewish student on the bus, who was said to have been driven to tears by the driver’s remarks.
The driver also reportedly said that Jesus died for their sins and “if we believe in him, we will be saved.”
A parent added that the driver told the children that “the only one who can free you all is Jesus Christ.”
The driver also distributed hats to the students, featuring the words “I am with you always” and a large cross.
In a statement to parents, Brooklyn Prospect International Elementary School said it had filed a complaint with the bus driver’s employer, Jofaz Transporation, and requested a new driver for the route.
The school confirmed that the driver had “stopped the bus for a period of time to make religious remarks and distribute religious merchandise to students,” according to the Post.
However, the school did not mention the driver’s diatribe, nor the specific comments made about Jews.
Jofaz Transportation said that the driver had been suspended following the incident.
