Tucker Carlson claims he is being probed for foreign ties

Far-right podcaster Tucker Carlson claims that the CIA is investigating him for possible violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act – offenses which, if proven, could land him in jail for up to five years.

Far-right internet personality Tucker Carlson is under investigation by the federal government over allegations that he has served as an unlisted agent of a foreign power, Carlson announced over the weekend.

In a five-minute video message published early Sunday morning, the 56-year-old podcaster and former Fox News host claimed that he was informed recently that the CIA is probing him for possible violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, a crime which carries with it punishments including up to five years in prison and fines of as much as $250,000 per offense.

“The other day, I found out that the CIA is preparing some kind of criminal referral against me, a crime report to the Department of Justice on the basis of a supposed crime I committed,” Carlson said.

The controversial pundit, who has in recent years become increasingly outspoken in his isolationist views, while at the same time lauding Russia, Qatar, and the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, claimed that the CIA investigation has focused on his communications with Iranian officials prior to the start of the current conflict.

Carlson suggested that the investigation could have been prompted by his frequent criticism of Israel.

“There are some people who are mad at me for my views about Israel, and they have some latitude.”

In 2025, shortly after the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, Carlson spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in what critics dubbed a softball interview that failed to mention Iran’s numerous human rights abuses, its nuclear program, or its plots to assassinate President Donald Trump.

Just days before Carlson’s video message, Texas Senator Ted Cruz called for the federal government to investigate Carlson for undeclared ties to foreign powers including Qatar.

“To be clear, Tucker Carlson is waging a war online against President Trump’s foreign policy,” Cruz said last week.
