UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called on all member states to support the full and effective implementation of the agreement. However, over the past year since the signing of the nuclear deal, Iran has repeatedly violated UN resolutions regarding its missile development.
The United Nations (UN) chief says that the Iran nuclear deal marked a fundamental change in the Islamic Republic’s relationship with the Security Council and has provided Iran with an opportunity for greater engagement with the international community.
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement commemorating the one year anniversary of the Security Council’s approval of the deal on Wednesday that the agreement is the best way to ensure the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program and realize the aspiration of the Iranian people.
Ban called on all member states to support the full and effective implementation of the agreement, adding that it was “of the utmost importance that (the nuclear deal) works for all its participants, including by delivering tangible benefits to the Iranian people.”
However, over the past year since the signing of the nuclear deal, Iran has repeatedly defied UNSC resolutions regarding its missile development.
Last week Ban presented the UNSC with a special on Iran’s lack of compliance with Council Resolution 2231, which adopted the nuclear agreement with Iran. According to the report, Ban is “concerned that those ballistic missile launches are not consistent with the constructive spirit demonstrated by the signing of the JCPOA.”
Ban’s report examined the Iranian ballistic missile program and found that it is not consistent with UN Resolution 2231.
The report also noted Iran’s disregard for the resolution’s restrictions on travel for officials such as the commander of Iran’s Quds Forces General Qasem Soleimani, who was sighted in Baghdad in violation of the resolution.
Additionally, the report mentioned an American report of Iranian arms smuggling to Yemen.
