US and Iran ‘negotiating right now,’ says Trump, adding Iran doesn’t want repeat of June strikes

Iran looking to avoid repeat of US airstrikes carried out in June, says President Trump, claiming negotiations are underway with multiple meetings between US and Iranian officials.

The United States and Iran are already engaged in negotiations, President Donald Trump hinted Tuesday, suggesting that more than one meeting between US and Iranian officials has already been scheduled, amid reports of disputes over the venue of Friday’s summit.

Speaking with reporters in the Oval Office, the president said that Iran has expressed a strong desire to avoid a new conflict with the United States and to resolve long-standing issues – including its nuclear program – diplomatically.

“They are all over. But they are negotiating. They would like to do something, and we will see if something is going to be done,” Trump said.

Trump emphasized that Iran is seeking to avoid a new American air campaign, referencing the one-day US operation last June targeting Iranian nuclear facilities.

The president added that negotiations are underway “right now,” and that more than one meeting has been scheduled.

“They had a chance to do something a while ago and it didn’t work out and we did ‘Midnight Hammer.’ I don’t think they want that happening again. But they would like to negotiate. We are negotiating with them right now.”

“There is more than one meeting,” Trump continued.

Trump refused to answer questions regarding the location of Friday’s planned summit, with reports that the meeting was originally scheduled to be held in Istanbul, only to be moved to Oman after Tehran threatened to withdraw from the gathering.

According to a report by Axios, which cited an Arab source, the US has agreed to Iran’s demand.

However, some details regarding the meeting are still being worked out, the source claimed.

“Negotiations are still ongoing about whether Arab and Muslim countries from the region will join the talks in Oman.”
