U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared together at the White House on Monday to unveil a comprehensive ceasefire and postwar Gaza plan that would release all the remaining hostages within 72 hours, pending approval by Hamas.
Trump said Netanyahu had agreed to the plan, which he described as “an extremely fair proposal.”
Standing beside the Israeli leader, the president said the initiative would require Hamas to disarm and release all hostages in exchange for an end to the fighting.
“If accepted by Hamas, all of the hostages, living and dead, would be released almost immediately,” he said, adding that he was “hearing that Hamas wants to get this done.”
The president said the deal would rely on support from Arab countries and could serve as a foundation for longterm stability.
“At least we’re at a minimum, very, very close. And I think we’re beyond very close,” Trump told reporters. He warned that if Hamas rejected the terms, “you have our full backing to do what you would,” addressing Netanyahu directly.
Netanyahu praised Trump as Israel’s strongest ally in Washington. “You are the greatest friend that Israel has ever had in the White House,” he said.
The prime minister also insisted that Trump’s framework “achieves all of Israel’s war aims.”
Netanyahu outlined his cabinet’s “day after” plan for Gaza, including the disarmament of Hamas, the enclave’s demilitarization, the return of all hostages, and Israel’s continued control over security parameters.
He emphasized that Gaza would require a new civilian administration but clarified there would be “no role for the Palestinian Authority until it undergoes major transformations.”
Trump also addressed international dynamics, criticizing countries that “foolishly” recognized a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly the previous week.
He reaffirmed his belief that “many Palestinians… wish to live in peace” while noting they had suffered under Hamas’ rule.
The proposal, detailed in a written statement, envisions Gaza becoming a “deradicalized terror-free zone” with a temporary technocratic committee administering daily life under the oversight of a new international body – the Board of Peace.
Trump said he would chair the board alongside global leaders, including former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The plan calls for a phased Israeli withdrawal, suspension of military operations, large-scale humanitarian aid, and an economic development program to rebuild Gaza.
Once hostages are freed, Israel would release 250 prisoners serving life sentences along with 1,700 detainees arrested after October 7, 2023.
Netanyahu said the US-led proposal provided “a realistic path for Gaza.”
Trump concluded by urging Hamas to accept the terms, calling the moment historic. “This is peace in the Middle East,” he said.
Netanyahu said: 'You will light a torch of civilian heroism on Independence Day.'
