Young mother who lost unborn baby to terror released from hospital

Shira Ish-Ran, who was seriously wounded in a Palestinian terror attack exactly one month ago, was released from Shaare Zedek hospital on Wednesday. She recovered sufficiently from her injuries to begin rehabilitation at Hadassah University Hospital – Mount Scopus.

Ish-Ran was hit in a shooting attack at a bus stop at the Ofra Junction on December 9 that also injured her husband and five others. She was 30 weeks pregnant, and doctors performed an emergency C-section in a desperate effort to save the baby’s life.

Named Amiad Yisrael (my eternal nation Israel), the infant died three days later. Hundreds attended the funeral at the Mount of Olives cemetery in Jerusalem.

Upon her release, Ish-Ran thanked God for the “ongoing miracle” of her recovery and expressed appreciation to the dedicated hospital staff as well as to all those who had prayed for her recovery.

“I came to the hospital flat on my back and I’m leaving on my feet….I have a lot to be thankful for,” she said.

Her husband Amichai focused on the support they received from so many people during this trying period in their lives.

“We feel that you are all with us,” he said. “We’re thinking about ways to preserve this unity and would be happy if you would send us ideas to honor the memory of Amiad Yisrael.”

‘The great miracle’

Ish-Ran’s father, Chaim Silverstein, described to Israel Hayom just how close his daughter had come to dying.

“The bullet entered her thigh, ruptured a main artery and caused an exit hole with a radius of 15 cm in her lower abdomen,” he said. “The great miracle was that despite the severe injury, the bullet did not damage vital organs, including the uterus and pelvis.”

Just a day before Ish-Ran’s release, security forces captured Assem Barghouti, one of the terrorists involved in the murder of her baby. His brother, Saleh Barghouti, who fired the shots, was killed by IDF forces.

Assem carried out another terror attack a few days later in the same area, killing two IDF soldiers and wounding one civilian and another soldier, Netanel Felber, who is still fighting for his life.

In a press conference a week after the attack, Ish-Ran sounded a defiant note, stating, “I will show [the terrorists]. I will bring many more babies into this world. Am Yisrael chai [the people of Israel live].”
