MK Yair Lapid announces he will run for Prime Minister

Israel has a coalition system of government which means the ruling government is always under threat of falling and talk of elections is almost always in the air.

Member of Knesset (MK) Yair Lapid, Chairman of the Yesh Atid political party, announced Sunday that his party will run in the next elections with the intention of becoming the largest party, which will be tasked with forming a coalition government and will make him prime minister.

In a party meeting in Rishon LeZion, Lapid outlined his party’s seven point plan to advance Israeli society, including a shift in Israel’s strategic perception and a cleaning-up of the political system.

Lapid, 53, a former actor, journalist and talk show host who served as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s finance minister during his previous government between 2013 and 2014, has lately had strong showings in the polls, and, in some cases, even passed Netanyahu’s Likud party.

Yesh Atid is currently part of the opposition.
