Netanyahu wants renewed sanctions on Iran after missile test

After a reported Iranian ballistic missile test, Netanyahu called for renewed sanctions against Iran. 

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is calling for the international community to reimpose sanctions on Iran after the country reportedly conducted a ballistic missile test over the weekend.

“Iran has again fired a ballistic missile in callous defiance of a UN resolution,” Netanyahu wrote on Facebook. “In my coming meeting in Washington with President Trump, I plan to raise the issue of renewing sanctions against Iran in relation to this and other things. We cannot allow Iranian aggression to go unanswered.”

Speaking to Fox News on Monday, a number of officials said that a ballistic missile test took place near Semnan, some 140 miles east of the capital of Tehran. During the reported test, a Khorramshahr medium-range ballistic missile was launched and eventually exploded after flying 600 miles.

UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the Iran nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 powers (US, UK, Germany, France, Russia and China), prohibits Iran from undertaking launching tests and activity on ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons.

“Iran has once again defied Security Council resolutions and revealed its true intentions,” remarked Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Danny Danon who also called for a response from the international community and the UN Security Council.

“The international community must not bury its head in the sand in the face of this Iranian aggression,” Danon continued. “The Security Council members must act immediately in response to these Iranian actions which endanger not only Israel, but the entire Middle East.”

Before leaving her post, President Obama’s Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power acknowledged reports of Iran’s non-compliance with its obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 2231.
