Attorney to political stars passes: Netanyahu mourns death

Jacob Weinroth, a leading Israeli attorney who represented Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, died Tuesday following a battle with cancer.

Attorney Jacob Weinroth passed away on Tuesday at the age of 71 after succumbing to cancer. He is best known for helping Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu navigate through several legal affairs. He also represented Sarah Netanyahu.

“My wife and I are saddened by the passing of attorney Jacob Weinroth. Jacob had a great personality, great wisdom, sharpness of mind, and a great sense of justice and loyalty to his people.”

A kind of attorney to the rich and famous, Weinroth similarly represented President Ezer Weizmann, Israeli Army Chief-of-Staff Rafael Eitan, several ministers, and other famous public personalities.

He also represented the Jewish Underground,  a group in the 1980s that sought to blow up the Dome of the Rock and engage in retaliatory attacks against Arabs.

Weinroth’s son, Dubi, mourned his father in a Facebook post, “I don’t know what was bigger with my father: His mind or his heart.” Quoting from the Second Book of Samuel, he wrote, “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel?”

Weinroth was born in Germany in 1947. His parents fled to the Soviet Union during World War II and made their way to Israel two years later, settling in the city of Netanya.

An ordained rabbi, Weinroth earned his law degrees from Tel Aviv University

He leaves behind a wife and six children.
