By World Israel News Staff Iran’s president has requested that President Donald Trump renew nuclear talks with Tehran, a former Iranian lawmaker has claimed. Former MP Mostafa Kavakebian told the Asr news site on Sunday that President Masoud Pezeshkian recently penned a letter to Trump, asking the American leader to resume talks with Iran aimed at reaching a new nuclear deal in exchange for sanctions relief. The missive was reportedly transferred to Trump via the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who visited the White House last Tuesday. In the letter, Pezeshkian is said to have offered to conduct nuclear talks with the US with no preconditions – a stark contrast to Iran’s rhetoric earlier this year, suggesting that the country would not engage in negotiations with the US in the near future, and that such talks could only take place after the US had paid compensation for Israeli and US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. “The content of the message was that we are willing to sit down and talk together—not a conversation that comes from a position of surrender, nor one where you dictate what should or should not be,” Kavakebian said. Trump told reporters last week that Tehran “very badly” wants to reach an agreement with the US. “Iran does want to make a deal. I think they very badly want to make a deal. I am totally open to it, and we’re talking to them, and we start a process.” Iran is under increasing internal pressure amid runaway inflation, plunging investment, and the worst drought in six decades, entering the sixth consecutive year of unusually low rainfall and record-low dam and reservoir levels. Key reservoirs are now at single-digit percentages of capacity, forcing Iranian officials to mull the relocation of the country’s capital from Tehran. With snapback sanctions imposed this fall and shortages of consumer goods, analysts say nervous investors are taking their money abroad, further weakening the Iranian economy, which is estimated to contract by a total of 1.7% in 2025, with further declines in early 2026.
