Israeli Minister calls for regime change in Syria

Israeli Minister Yoav Gallant said that it is “a clear and unequivocal statement” that “we want Assad to fall” and be replaced by a more moderate regime, after the US announced the discovery of a crematorium in Syria.

Israel’s Minister of Construction and Housing, Yoav Gallant, a Member of Knesset from the Kulanu faction, expressed a desire for the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to be replaced by a more moderate regime, in an interview with Israel Army Radio.

“Our statement is that we want Assad to fall and the replacement of the Alawite (regime) with moderate Sunni rule,” Gallant said. “That is a clear and unequivocal statement.”

Gallant pointed to the apparent discovery by the United States of a crematorium built and used by the Syrian government to carry out mass killings.

“Beginning in 2013, the Syrian regime modified a building within the Saydnaya complex to support what we believe is a crematorium, as shown in the photos that we have distributed to you,” said Stuart Jones, acting Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department, during a press conference on Monday.

“Although the regime’s many atrocities are well documented, we believe that the building of a crematorium is an effort to cover up the extent of mass murders taking place in Saydnaya prison,” Jones added.

Gallant contended that such discoveries amount to revelations of genocide.

“What is happening in Syria falls under the definition of genocide with all its parameters,” Gallant continued. “Assad has reached the lowest point since World War II.”

Gallant went as far as to call for the assassination of Assad at the Second International Ground Warfare and Logistics Conference west of Jerusalem in Latrun.

“In my view, we are crossing a red line, and in my view, the time has come to assassinate Assad,” Gallant reportedly said. “It’s as simple as that.”
