By World Israel News Staff The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) — an agency with extensively documented ties to Hamas — is now demanding a central role in rebuilding the Gaza Strip. In an Op-Ed published in the far-left UK outlet The Guardian, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini argued that his organization should be granted authority to lead reconstruction efforts in Gaza. He wrote that “the UN, including UNRWA, has the expertise and the resources to address critical humanitarian needs effectively and at scale.” Lazzarini argued that Israel should not be permitted to conduct security screenings or supervise UNRWA employees, suppliers, or aid shipments to ensure they are not connected to terror organizations. “We must be allowed to work freely and independently, without arbitrary and unreasonable restrictions on the entry and movement of supplies and personnel,” he wrote. Lazzarini also claimed that UNRWA’s education services — including what he described as a “well-regarded human rights program” — would prevent radicalization among Gaza’s youth. However, over the years, UNRWA schools have been caught promoting antisemitic and anti-Israel propaganda in official classroom materials, including content encouraging violence against Jews and Israelis. Notably, Lazzarini’s Op-Ed also omitted any reference to Hamas war crimes against Gazan civilians, including documented cases of Hamas looting and hoarding humanitarian aid. Most notably, his article made no mention of Hamas’s massacre of October 7th, when thousands of Hamas terrorists invaded Israel, murdering 1,200 civilians, committing mass rape and kidnapping 250 people — which triggered the current war. UNRWA has deep ties to Hamas. According to Israeli intelligence reports, dozens of salaried UNRWA employees took part in the October 7th attack. One UNRWA worker even used an official UN vehicle during the invasion, placing the body of a murdered Israeli inside and abducting it back into Gaza. Recordings recovered from the phones of UNRWA employees involved in the attack include a clip of a man bragging about capturing an Israeli Jewish woman, referring to her as a “sabaya” — an Islamic term for a sex slave taken during jihad. In addition, terror infrastructure — including tunnels and weapons storehouses — has been repeatedly discovered beneath or inside UNRWA facilities, including schools and clinics.
