Both pilots are presumed dead.The footage shows the Syrian jet in flames, and people can be heard in the background shouting “Allahu Akbar.”The pictures also show a body that ISIS says was one of the pilots. The official Syrian SANA news agency stated that the warplane was “striking terrorists’ hideouts” on the outskirts of al-Yarmouk Valley in the countryside of Quneitra.“The Israeli aggression confirms once again the enemy’s adoption of the terrorist groups through targeting a warplane of the Syrian Arab Army that was bombing their gatherings in the vicinity of al-Yarmouk Valley in the Syrian airspaces,” a Syrian military official charged.A Syrian Air Force Sukhoi Su-22 fighter jet infiltrated about one mile into Israeli airspace before it was shot down by two IDF Patriot missiles.Read The Syrian journalist promoting peace with IsraelThe IDF monitored the path of the fighter jet before shooting.The Sukhoi took off from the T-4 Airbase in Syria and then flew towards Israel at a high speed. This happened after hours of increased internal fighting in Syria and Syrian Air Force activity.IDF issued warnings and messages“We issued warnings and messages through different channels, in various languages, numerous times over the day to avoid any misunderstandings or any violations of Israeli airspace. We have continued to deliver messages through various channels, including through the UN, UNDOF, and we will not tolerate any violation of the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement. We hold the Syrian Regime accountable for any such violations coming from the Syrian side,” said IDF spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus.This was not the first time this year that aircraft from Syria have infiltrated Israeli airspace. Most recently, on July 13th, a Syrian UAV was shot down by a Patriot missile after flying in the demilitarized zone.The IDF is on high alert and will continue to fulfill its mission of defending Israeli civilians and sovereignty, and will operate against the violation of the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement, the army stated.
