Seattle gets World Cup ‘Pride Match’ starring Egypt and Iran

Notably, the Pride branding is not a FIFA initiative, as host cities are permitted to build their own fan experiences around match days

Seattle organizers say they won’t alter plans for a World Cup “Pride Match,” even after the fixture landed Egypt and Iran, two governments that criminalize same-sex relationships and routinely target LGBTQ+ people.

To coincide with Seattle’s Pride weekend, local officials set the June 26 fixture as the city’s designated Pride Match.

But after Friday’s World Cup draw finalized the groups, the city learned its Pride Match would now feature two of the world’s most repressive regimes on LGBTQ+ rights.

Iran imposes punishments that can include lashings or even the death penalty for same-sex relations.

In Egypt, security forces regularly use broad “morality” and “debauchery” statutes to arrest LGBTQ+ people, a pattern documented by rights groups over the past decade.

Despite that backdrop, Seattle’s Pride Match Advisory Committee said the event will go forward unchanged.

“Soccer has a unique power to unite people across borders, cultures, and beliefs. We are honoured to host a Pride Match and to celebrate Pride as part of a global football community,” a spokesperson told Outsports.

“This match reflects our ongoing commitment to respect, dignity, and unity for all.”

Still, the matchup is already sparking fierce reactions online. On one Reddit thread discussing the match, users wrote, “I’m more surprised Iran is playing in the U.S.” and “Nah, no chance—any ‘morals’ go out the window when there’s this much money involved, obviously.”

Notably, the Pride branding is not a FIFA initiative. Host cities are permitted to build their own fan experiences around match days, and Seattle’s committee chose to highlight LGBTQ+ inclusion through art installations, community partnerships, and Pride-related programming across the city.
