Former Israeli minister sent to prison for corruption

The Former Israeli Minister of Tourism, Stas Misezhnikov, admitted to some of the charges brought against him and will serve 15 months in prison and pay a fine. 

Former Israeli Minister of Tourism Stas Misezhnikov was sentenced to 15 months in prison on Tuesday after signing a deal with the state, thus ending the saga surrounding corruption allegations related to his conduct as minister.

Misezhnikov signed a plea bargain with the State Prosecutor’s Office in which he admitted to the corruption charges. While serving as tourism minister, he allocated a budget of NIS 1 million to a festival held in Eilat in 2010, while asking the event organizers to employ his girlfriend, Julia Roth.

Drug possession and drug use charges were dropped.

He will also pay a NIS 70,000 fine.

Charges of taking bribes were also removed because of evidentiary difficulties.
