UN Secretary-General calls Israel’s war against Hamas ‘fundamentally wrong’

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres suggests Israel might be guilty of war crimes in Gaza, says that there is “something fundamentally wrong” with the IDF’s war against Hamas.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations excoriated Israel’s military operations against the Hamas terror organization, suggesting there was “something fundamentally wrong” with the entire IDF campaign against the Gaza terror group following the October 7th, 2023 invasion.

On Wednesday, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was interviewed as part of the Reuters NEXT conference in New York City, and offered his thoughts on, and criticism of, Israel’s two-year war on Hamas.

Guterres, who has repeatedly castigated Israel’s handling of the Gaza war in the past, hinted that he believed the Jewish state was likely guilty of war crimes in the coastal enclave.

“There are strong reasons to believe that that possibility might be a reality,” Guterres said after being asked whether he thought Israel had committed war crimes in Gaza.

The 76-year-old Portuguese diplomat said that after roughly two years of war, Israel has failed to dismantle Hamas, while the Gaza Strip has suffered widespread devastation, arguing that this demonstrated that something was “fundamentally wrong” in Israel’s approach.

“I think there was something fundamentally wrong in the way this operation was conducted with total neglect in relation to the deaths of civilians and to the destruction of Gaza,” Guterres said.

“Gaza is destroyed, but Hamas is not yet destroyed. So there is something fundamentally wrong with the way this is conducted.”

Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon fired back, castigating Guterres in comments to Reuters.

“The only crime committed is the moral abomination that more than two years after the horrific massacres of October 7, the UN Secretary-General has still not visited Israel – and has instead used his elevated platform to lambast and condemn Israel and Israelis at every opportunity.”
