Hamas’s political chief Ismail Haniyeh and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas were among the first to call Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Erdogan was contacted by Haniyeh by phone on Sunday, according to a statement posted on the terror group’s official website.

Under the rule of Erdogan, Turkey provided Hamas leaders with shelter and gave them financial support, including facilitating the illegal transfer of funds used to expand terrorist actions against Israel.

Israeli policies were compared by Erdogan to Nazi policies.

According to the Turkish daily Hürriyet, Abbas offered Erdogan congratulations as did a number of other leaders. These included leaders from Kuwaiti, Macedonian, Serbia, Uzbekistan, Sudan, Bosnia and Qatar.

Azerbaijan’s president was the first to offer Erdogan congratulations, said Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency.

Foreign ministers from Greece, Hungary and Guinea and Venezuela’s deputy president have all congratulated Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu over the phone.
