Israel was ranked as the eighth most powerful country in the world, according to a survey published Saturday by US News and World Report.

The rankings look at the influence of a nation as well as its political, economic and military power. A country’s alliances factor in as does its influence and whether the country is a leader, US News and World Report said in its description of the rankings.

The US was ranked the world’s most powerful country, followed by Russia, China, Germany, Britain, France and Japan.

Israel was ranked after Japan.

The “Most Powerful” list is part of the media organization’s annual “Best Countries” study, which evaluated 80 countries based on responses from 21,000 people.

The “Best Countries” rankings were formed in partnership with global marketing communications company Y&R’s brand strategy firm, BAV Group, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

They are based on a survey that asked more than 21,000 people from four regions to associate 80 countries with specific attributes.

The Power subranking is based on an equally weighted average of scores from five country attributes that related to a country’s power: a leader, economically influential, politically influential, strong international alliances and strong military alliances.

The Power sub-ranking score had a 7 percent weight in the overall Best Countries ranking.
