Trump vows to ‘help Netanyahu out’ in corruption trial

President Donald Trump slams Prime Minister Netanyahu’s ongoing corruption trial, calling the case “very unfair.”

President Donald Trump on Sunday said his administration will provide assistance to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his ongoing corruption trial, while reiterating his criticism of the Israeli judicial system over its handling of the trial.

In an interview aired by CBS on Sunday, Trump spoke with Norah O’Donnell on 60 Minutes on topics ranging from his recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to tariffs, the war in Ukraine, and the Middle East.

When asked whether he would be able to pressure Netanyahu into accepting Palestinian statehood, Trump pivoted, responding by praising the Israeli leader and offering him support in his trial.

“He’s fine,” Trump said. “Look, he’s a wartime prime minister. I worked very well with him,” Trump continued, acknowledging that he “had to push him a little bit one way or the other” in order to secure the Gaza ceasefire deal.

“He’s a very talented guy. He’s a guy that– has never been pushed before, actually. And that’s the kind of person you needed in Israel at the time. It was very important.”

Trump lamented that Netanyahu has been treated unfairly at home, including in his corruption trial, which involves three separate cases featuring indictments including fraud, breach of trust, and bribery.

“I don’t think they treat him very well. He’s under trial for some things, and I don’t think they treat him very well.”

“We’ll be involved in that to help him out a little bit, because I think it’s very unfair.”

This is not the first time President Trump has weighed in on Netanyahu’s trial.

In June, Trump wrote on his Truth Social account that the trial “should be cancelled, immediately, or a pardon given to a great hero, who has done so much” for Israel. Trump called the trial a “witch hunt.”

Last month, during his address to the Knesset, Trump urged his Israeli counterpart, Isaac Herzog, to pardon Netanyahu, while mocking the indictment against the Israeli premier.
