Trump’s son-in-law becomes subject of interest in FBI investigation

Jared Kushner’s lawyer said his client is prepared to cooperate with Congress regarding any inquiries on his previous meetings with Russian officials.

US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, Jared Kushner, has become the subject of interest for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) probe into alleged ties between Trump’s presidential campaign and Russia, according to reports on Thursday by The Washington Post and NBC.

Kushner, however, is not a target in the FBI’s investigation, said Jamie Gorelick, Kushner’s lawyer. Gorelick stressed his client is prepared to fully cooperate with any investigation.

“Mr. Kushner previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about these meetings,” Gorelick said. “He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry.”

Of particular interest with regards to Kushner is his meeting with Russian Ambassador to the United States, Sergey Kislyak, during the transition period after Trump’s election in November and his inauguration in January. Kushner also met with Sergey Gorkov, head of the Russian Vnesheconom Bank, that is under US sanctions for connections with Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.

Kushner failed to include these meetings, both occurring in December, in his security-clearance forms, according to the New York Times. Nevertheless, the White House said that both meetings were normal and inconsequential. Moreover, Kushner’s lawyer said the absence of the meetings in Kushner’s security clearance forms was an error.

Former national security adviser for Trump, Michael Flynn, was also reportedly present during Kushner’s meeting with Kislyak. Under pressure, Flynn handed in his resignation after it was discovered that he failed to disclose numerous details regarding a variety of conversations he had with Kislyak over the transition period.
