False alarm in Israel’s south sends hundreds hurrying to air raid shelters

An air raid siren sounded in Kibbutz Erez in Israel’s south.

A siren that sent hundreds running to shelters turned out to be a false alarm. The air raid siren sounded in Kibbutz Erez on Sunday morning.

Kibbutz Erez is located in the north-western Negev just north of the Gaza Strip and 11 miles south of the city of Ashkelon.  It is under the jurisdiction of the Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council.

This is the second false alarm within a week’s time. On Thursday morning, an air raid siren was sounded at Kibbutz Zikim, located between Ashkelon and Gaza as children were attending school.

The Iron Dome air defense system was activated to fend off what turned out to be a case of “mistaken identity.”

“The warning system was activated as required,” said a military statement. Interceptors were launched “toward targets as dictated by policy.”
