‘Why is Tel Aviv attack more important than rockets on the Golan?’

Son of couple killed by Hezbollah anti-tank missile slams mainstream media for glossing over his parents’ slaying, focusing on Tel Aviv drone attack.

A young man whose parents were killed by a Hezbollah anti-tank missile in the Golan Heights just two weeks ago is speaking out about what he says is the disproportionate media attention focused on the Houthi drone strike in Tel Aviv.

18-year-old Matan Baranes leveraged social media to call out what he considers to be a hypocritical approach by Israel’s Hebrew-language TV channels regarding the coverage of attacks in differnet parts of the country.

“When a married couple [with children] are murdered in the Golan Heights, [TV channels] broadcast ‘Dancing with the Stars.’ When a drone hit Tel Aviv, there was a breaking news broadcast at 4 in the morning,” Baranes wrote on his Instagram account.

“Everyone’s equal, but some people are less equal than others,” he added sarcastically.

An anti-tank missile launched by Hezbollah struck the car in which Baranes’ parents, Nir and Noa, were traveling on July 9th.

The pair were just a few minutes away from their home in Kibbutz Ortal, a community in northern Israel that was not evacuated amid the ongoing terror rocket fire.

The Baranes’ car immediately burst into flames and the couple were killed instantly, orphaning their three children.

For months, residents of Israel’s embattled north have bemoaned what they say is a lack of decisive military action against Hezbollah, and a lethargic response by the Israeli government to provide financial aid to struggling businesses in the region.

“The reality in the north must change and move from defense to attack. Our children are going to sleep scared and wake up terrified by sirens,” said Maayan Benizri, a resident of the north, in a recent statement urging the IDF to escalate its campaign against Hezbollah.

“This is an intolerable reality and we must put an end to this…it is unbelievable that 2024 Israel is showing weakness to our enemies.”
