Ocasio-Cortez accuses Trump of anti-Semitism over Schiff put-down

Ocasio-Cortez said Trump was guilty of “targeted antisemitism” against Schiff.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) accused President Donald Trump of anti-Semitism in regard to his attacks on California Rep. Adam Schiff.

“Understand that Trump is engaged in deliberate, atrocious, targeted antisemitism towards Chairman Schiff. Then ask yourself why no one cares to denounce it – esp when his accusation of it towards others drove full news cycles earlier this year,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted on Oct. 5.

“It’s wrong. It’s harmful. And his bigotry is reflective of the white supremacist base he relies on for political gain,” she tweeted.

Trump has recently referred to Schiff as “Shifty Schiff.” Schiff is leading the impeachment push against the president as head of the House Intelligence Committee.

Trump made his comments on Oct. 2 at the White House. “He should resign from office in disgrace and frankly they should look at him for treason,” Trump said of Schiff, adding that he couldn’t carry Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s “blank-strap.”

It’s not clear that the president was making an anti-Semitic reference in labeling Schiff, as he has a history of colorful put-downs against his political opponents, whether Democrat or Republican. On Saturday, Trump called Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) ““a pompous ‘ass’ who has been fighting me from the beginning.”

Curiously, Ocasio-Cortez defended fellow Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar in a series of tweets in March after the Minnesota congresswoman had made much more overtly anti-Semitic statements, prompting a resolution by House Democrats to push through a resolution condemning anti-Semitism in an attempt to distance  themselves from her remarks.

Supporters of Trump have pointed to the fact that his daughter Ivanka converted to Orthodox Judaism and that he has made several high-profile moves in favor of Israel.
