‘Trump was right’ – US ambassador shows support for Netanyahu at trial

American Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee makes appearance at Prime Minister Netanyahu’s trial, backs Trump’s criticism of the trial.

American Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee made an appearance Wednesday at the ongoing trial of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in an apparent show of support for the Israeli leader.

Huckabee, a long-time supporter of Israel who previously served as the Governor of Arkansas, briefly attended a hearing at the Tel Aviv District Court as part of Netanyahu’s corruption trial.

The ambassador met with Netanyahu and briefly posed for a photo alongside the premier and Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana.

When asked by Israeli reporters why he chose to attend the hearing, Huckabee said he was there as an observer.

“Because I wanted to see what was happening. Why did you come?”

Asked about the appearance in court during Wednesday’s Muni Expo event in Tel Aviv, Huckabee said he had planned on attending the trial hearing to represent President Donald Trump.

Last month, Trump twice castigated the Netanyahu trial, calling it a “witch hunt.”

“It’s a matter of representing what the president has said repeatedly,” Huckabee said at the Muni Expo.

“The president has made his position very clear. He has not intervened in the proceedings or in the outcome. He recognizes that has to go its own way. But it’s a personal thing for him. He considers the prime minister a friend.”

During the hearing, all observers, including Huckabee, were asked to leave the chambers as the court conducted a closed-door deliberation.

After leaving the hearing, Huckabee appeared to signal his own rejection of the Netanyahu trial, retweeting Trump’s June 28th attack on the trial.

“I stopped by the trial of the Israeli PM in Tel Aviv today,” Huckabee wrote. “My conclusion? Donald Trump is right…again.”
