Leader of British party boycotts Trump to protest Gaza war

Head of Britain’s third-largest political party announces he will boycott dinner with President Trump hosted by King Charles, accusing Israel of starving Gazans and demanding US promote Palestinian statehood.

A British lawmaker and party chief is boycotting a dinner held by King Charles for President Donald Trump in protest of Israel’s ongoing war against the Hamas terror organization in Gaza and to pressure the Trump administration to push for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

President Trump is slated to visit Britain next month, marking his second state trip to the country since returning to office in January.

During the visit, the president is scheduled to attend a banquet at Windsor Castle hosted by King Charles and featuring leaders of Britain’s parliamentary factions.

However, on Wednesday, the leader of the third-largest party in Parliament announced he will boycott the event in protest of both the ongoing war in Gaza and the Trump administration’s refusal to press for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

In an opinion piece published by The Guardian, MP Ed Davey, head of the Liberal Democrats, pushed false claims of mass starvation in the Gaza Strip while demanding an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

“The humanitarian crisis in Gaza must stop. The famine must end,” Davey wrote.

“There is one man, more than anyone else, who has the power to make it happen. One man who could pick up the phone to Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, and tell him to end the aid blockade that is causing suffering and starvation on such an appalling scale.”

Trump, Davey continued, “could do those things today if he chose to. He has more power than anyone else finally to force a ceasefire and put Israel and Palestine on the path to a lasting peace with a two-state solution.”

Britain’s second-largest parliamentary faction, the Conservative Party, blasted Davey’s boycott, calling it an “act of deep disrespect.”

Under Davey’s leadership, the center-left Liberal Democrats gained eight seats in the 2024 general election, winning 72 seats in the House of Commons.

In July, Davey called for a sweeping arms embargo on Israel while parroting claims by Hamas of “mass starvation” in Gaza.

“Mass starvation in Gaza and over 1,000 Palestinians killed while seeking aid since May. The government says the situation is intolerable yet they continue to tolerate it,” Davey wrote on Bluesky. “The UK needs to stop all arms exports to the Israeli government – today.”

Earlier this month, Davey accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of engaging in “ethnic cleansing” and reiterated his call for an arms embargo.

“Netanyahu’s plan to occupy Gaza is abhorrent, and it’s increasingly clear that his goal is ethnic cleansing. The UK can’t just sit on its hands. The prime minister must stop all arms exports to Israel and sanction Netanyahu and his Cabinet,” Davey said.
