Syrian president Al-Sharaa makes history as first Syrian leader to visit the White House

Analysts say the resumption of direct dialogue with Damascus could influence security coordination, humanitarian access, and regional diplomacy involving Israel and neighboring states.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa held a landmark, informal and closely watched meeting at the White House on Monday, marking the first time a Syrian leader has visited Washington and signaling a dramatic shift in US-Syria relations.

The low-profile arrival, which took place on West Executive Avenue rather than through a more ceremonial entrance, drew attention in diplomatic circles but did not diminish the significance of the encounter.

Al-Sharaa, still serving in a transitional capacity after leading the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad, has spent the past year trying to reposition Syria internationally.

His efforts have included high-level visits across the Middle East, Europe, Russia, and South America, as well as a trip to New York in September to address the UN General Assembly.

Monday’s meeting with President Donald Trump is seen as the most consequential step in his campaign to reintroduce Syria to the global arena and secure relief from sanctions.

The White House meeting took place one day after Al-Sharaa arrived in Washington for the historic visit.

According to US officials, the administration suspended enforcement of some Caesar Act sanctions for 180 days during the talks, a development aligned with Al-Sharaa’s push to rehabilitate Syria’s standing overseas.

The meeting also comes at a time when Washington is recalibrating its regional strategy, including how it cooperates with local governments in the ongoing fight against ISIS.
