Chanukah commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem following the Jewish victory over the Syrian-Greeks in 165 BCE.Sufganiyot (donuts) and potato latkes (pancakes) are traditional Chanukah foods as the holiday celebrates the miracle of the oil that should have sufficed for one day but burned for eight when the Maccabees – the Jewish army – rededicated the Temple.
