Danon seeks help from Haley to stop arming of Hezbollah

In a letter to Trump’s UN Ambassador, Danon wrote that Hezbollah “continued to build up its military infrastructure in clear violation of Security Council resolutions.”

In a letter to his US counterpart, Nikki Haley, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Danny Danon expressed a need for the UN Security Council to prevent the continued arming of the Lebanese terrorist organization Hezbollah.

“I am writing to you in your capacity as the president of the Security Council to once again alert the members of the council to the dangerous and destabilizing actions of the Iranian proxy Hezbollah in our region,” Danon wrote to Haley, who served as the UN Security Council’s president for the month of April.

“Hezbollah, the internationally designated terror organization, unabatedly continues to build up its military infrastructure in the towns and villages of southern Lebanon, in clear violation of Security Council resolutions 1701 and 1559,” Danon continued.

Both resolutions called for the disbanding and disarmament of all other armed groups in Lebanon aside from Lebanon’s army.

It was reported that on April 20, Hezbollah had conducted a tour for dozens of journalists alongside the Lebanese side of the demarcation line between Lebanon and Israel, Danon noted. “The journalists witnessed and took pictures of Hezbollah fighters in full military regalia stationed along the route, holding guns and RPG launchers.”

“This recent report adds to other evidence that demonstrates Hezbollah’s ongoing efforts in strengthening its military infrastructure in southern Lebanon,” he said, citing the terrorist group’s smuggling of weapons from Syria into Lebanon and reported use of weapons-production factories built by terror proxy Iran on Lebanese territory.

“(Hezbollah) has amassed over 150 thousand rockets and missiles; positioning its arsenal in the midst of the civilian population throughout southern Lebanon,” Danon added, while also noting that “more than two-thirds of the civilian structures in the Shiite villages of southern Lebanon have become an integral part of Hezbollah’s military array.”

Moreover, Danon wrote of the need to rein in Lebanon’s president from endorsing and supporting a complementary role for Hezbollah with Lebanon’s army, in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

“Lebanese President Michel Aoun stated in a recent interview that Hezbollah’s weapons complement the action of the Lebanese army,” he noted.

“The Security Council must send a strong message to the Government of Lebanon and demand that it fully implements these resolutions, not only in word but in concrete action,” Danon stated.

Former UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon had expressed similar concerns in his final report to the UN Security Council in January.
