Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei dismissed President Donald Trump’s address in which he announced the US’ exit from the Iran nuclear deal as “empty and absurd,” and charged him of lying “several times.”
“Trump threatened the Islamic establishment and Iranian people that he will do this and he will do that. I say on behalf of the people of Iran: Mr. Trump, you are talking nonsense!” Khamenei said on Wednesday during a meeting with Iranian educators in honor of Teacher’s Week.
He hit back at Trump’s “silly and cheap” comments, which he said included more than 10 lies, claiming that Trump had “made a damn mistake” threatening Iran.
The US withdrawal from the nuclear deal indicates that Iran’s nuclear program was not the real issue, and was only a pretext to weaken Iran, Khamenei added.
“Now you can see, we accepted the JCPOA, but the enmities are still in place,” Khamenei said, referring to the Iran nuclear deal, known officially as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
“Now, they are focusing on the missile program and Iran’s presence in the region; if we give in to their requests, they will raise another issue,” he alleged.
“The reason behind US opposition against the establishment in Iran is that they want to maintain an absolute domination over the country,” he said. “But the Islamic Revolution has cut their hands.”
Khamenei said Iranian administration officials are now faced with a “tough test of safeguarding the Iranian nation’s dignity” in dealing with the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal.
In a speech from the White House on Tuesday night, Trump accused Iran of sponsoring terrorism and seeking to develop nuclear weapons before announcing the US’ withdrawal from the nuclear accord.
In an open session of the Iranian Parliament on Wednesday morning, a number of lawmakers set fire to the US flag and piece paper intended to represent the JCPOA.
