Israel demands world act against Iran’s missile program

Responding to Iran’s latest missile launch, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said that the test proves that Iran continues to act in defiance of the Security Council, and chastised the international community for burying its head in the sand.

Days after the Islamic Republic conducted another ballistic missile test capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon presented a special report to the Security Council (UNSC).

The report was compiled a year after the approval of Security Council Resolution 2231, which adopted the nuclear agreement with Iran. According to the report, Ban is “concerned that those ballistic missile launches are not consistent with the constructive spirit demonstrated by the signing of the JCPOA.”

On July 11, Tehran tried to launch a ballistic missile using North Korean technology. The test failed when the missile exploded after liftoff.

Speaking at the entrance to the Security Council, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said that “this latest missile test proves that Iran continues to act in defiance of the Security Council. The international community cannot bury its head in the sand and make do with words to combat the Iranian threat.”

He noted that “the Council members must understand that Iran’s actions do not only defy the Security Council, but present a real threat to Israel, the Middle East, and the entire free world.”

This last test was the latest attempt in the year since the signing of the nuclear deal.

The Secretary General’s report examined the Iranian ballistic missile program and found that it is not consistent with resolution 2231.

The report also noted Iran’s disregard for the resolution’s restrictions on travel for officials such as the commander of Iran’s Quds Forces General Qasem Soleimani, who was sighted in Baghdad in violation of the resolution.

Additionally, the report mentioned an American report of Iranian arms smuggling to Yemen.
