New Democratic leadership wants to be Trump’s ‘worst nightmare’

Trump responded sarcastically to the election of Tom Perez as new Democratic National Committee Chairman saying, “He could not be happier for him or for the Republican party!”

Newly-elected Chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Tom Perez, called for a united front against President Donald Trump and his agenda.

“A united Democratic Party is not only our best hope, it is Donald Trump’s nightmare,” said Perez, former Labor Secretary for President Obama.  “We are one family, and I know we will leave here united today.”

An attempt at unity was made when Congressman Keith Ellison, a more progressive and anti-establishment candidate, who challenged Perez in the final round of voting, was nominated as Deputy Chairman.

“We need to do more to collaborate with our partners in the progressive movement,” Perez added.

Ellison conveyed a similarly harmonious tone.

“I am asking you to give everything you’ve got to support Chairman Perez,” Ellison said to DNC members. “We don’t have the luxury, folks, to walk out of this room divided.”

As one of the Congressional figureheads for the anti-establishment wing of the Democratic party, Ellison has also been criticized for possible anti-Semitism.

As Democrats attempt to unite after bitter internal divides between establishment and anti-establishment party wings, they will have a lot of ground to recoup. Since 2010, the Democratic party has lost control of the federal government, and more than two thirds of state legislative bodies across the US. Republicans also control more than double the number of governorships than Democrats (33-16 respectively).

President Trump tweeted sarcastically about the DNC’s nomination of Perez.

“Congratulations to Thomas Perez, who has just been named Chairman of the DNC,” wrote Trump. “I could not be happier for him, or for the Republican Party!”

Perez responded, reiterating that he and Ellison will be Trump’s worst nightmare. “Call me Tom, and don’t get too happy,” wrote Perez.  “Keith Ellison  and I, and Democrats united across the country, will be your worst nightmare.”
