Iran continuing to fire explosive drones at ships in Hormuz

American forces are intercepting Iranian drones targeting vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

A senior Trump administration official told NBC News that Iran has continued launching explosive drones at commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz despite the digital signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Sunday evening.

The official said U.S. forces have been working to intercept the drones, which are being launched by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, before they can damage commercial shipping or American military assets in the region.

According to the official, the attacks are not isolated incidents. Drones have reportedly been launched nightly for the past three consecutive nights.

The continued attacks come despite President Donald Trump’s repeated assertions that the Strait of Hormuz remains fully open and safe for maritime traffic.

The U.S. military continues to support commercial vessels attempting to transit the strategic waterway, many of which have been stranded in the area for nearly four months following the outbreak of the war in late February.

Speaking to CNN, another U.S. official said the MoU was intentionally written with “vague” language to provide flexibility for future negotiations aimed at securing a longer-term ceasefire and more comprehensive agreements between Washington and Tehran.

“People shouldn’t read too much into the language of the MoU,” the official said, emphasizing that it is a “political document” designed to make it as easy as possible for the Iranian regime to sell to its people.

“What’s more important than the actual document is the understandings we have with each other,” the official added.

The United States and Iran are expected to formally sign the agreement during a ceremony in Switzerland on Friday.

In the meantime, officials from both countries have offered conflicting accounts regarding the agreement’s contents and scope.

Israeli officials have said they will not withdraw from southern Lebanon and that the IDF’s operations are not subject to the agreement.

However, the Iranian regime has maintained that IDF troops leaving Lebanon is a central condition of the MoU.
