Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that President Donald Trump’s offer to meet with Iran’s representatives at the U.N. in September is “a trick for confusing the other side.”

“One time they propose negotiations without preconditions, and one time they say negotiations should come with 12 conditions,” Khamenei said. “Such remarks either result from their disorganized policy, or work as a trick for confusing the other side.”

“However, the Islamic Republic would not get confused, because our path is clear and we know what we are doing,” he said.

Khamenei said that the U.S. has no other choice but to apply maximum pressure on Iran in order to force it to return to the negotiating table because Iran is too powerful a foe to be dealt with through normal conventions.

“The U.S. administration’s policy is maximum pressure on Iran in the form of various sanctions, threats and a load of nonsense because the current U.S. administration believes that it cannot bring the Islamic Republic to its knees or force it to show humility and acceptance with formality and compliment,” he said.

Khamenei also stressed that the U.S.  has convinced the European countries that applying maximum pressure on Iran is the best strategy to getting it back to the negotiating table.

“The U.S. regime seeks to set it as a definite policy for both its internal rivals and for the Europeans that the only way to deal with Iran would be maximum pressure,” he said.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif are expected to be in attendance at the U.N. General Assembly in New York later this month.
