Palestinian teen who assaulted IDF soldiers sentenced to 8 months

Palestinian Ahed Tamimi will serve eight months for slapping IDF soldiers in December.

Ahed Tamimi, the Palestinian arrested last December after a video of her slapping and kicking an IDF officer went viral, will serve an eight-month prison sentence after agreeing to a plea bargain with the military prosecution.

Her cousin, 21-year-old Nur Tamimi, will serve a five-month sentence for her role in the incident, while her mother Nariman will serve eight months. The agreement is pending the approval of the Ofer military court.

The cousins were filmed assaulting a company commander and a soldier in the village of Nebi Salah, the site of frequent violent demonstrations and clashes between residents and IDF troops. Ahed Tamimi was charged with assault and five additional counts of throwing rocks, participating in disturbances, threats and incitement. Nur Tamimi was charged with assault in aggravated circumstances, while Nariman Tamimi was charged with aiding and abetting assault and also with incitement connected to a previous disturbance.

The Tamimi family has a long history of clashing with the army, often filmed and distributed widely on social media. Ahed, for example, tried to force soldiers in 2012 to release her younger brother, who had been detained for throwing stones, by biting and punching them.

In 2011, Ahed’s father Bassem Tamimi was convicted and jailed for inciting minors to commit violent crimes, when he was caught organizing youth from Nebi Salah to march toward the neighboring Jewish village of Halamish to throw stones.
