Palestinian terrorists fired a rocket at Israel’s civilian population in southern Israel late Wednesday night. The rocket exploded in an unpopulated area near Ashkelon, causing no injuries or damage.

Sirens were set off by the rocket attack, sending thousands of Israelis running for cover.

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) responded by attacking Hamas terror targets in Gaza early Thursday morning.

The past few weeks have seen a sharp increase in rocket attacks from Gaza.

The IDF has placed full responsibility for the attack on the Hamas terror organization, which controls the Strip. “Hamas is the address and it bears responsibility,” the IDF announced, saying it would not tolerate any attempts to harm the citizens of Israel.

No organization has taken responsibility for the attack, but a Salafist terror organization linked with the Islamic State (ISIS) is assumed to be behind the attack.

Earlier this month, an ISIS-affiliated group fired three rockets into southern Israel from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. In that attack, too, no one was hurt and there was no damage.
