Trump: ‘Just ask Israel about walls’

Following up on remarks a couple of weeks earlier, Trump once again defended Israel’s policy on constructing walls for national security reasons.

President Donald Trump once again defended Israel’s construction of a wall for national security reasons, while addressing a number of police chiefs and sheriffs in Washington on Wednesday.

“Just ask Israel about walls,” Trump said during the speech. “Do walls work? Just ask Israel. They work, if it’s properly done.”

Trump had referenced Israel’s construction of walls during an interview with Fox News commentator Sean Hannity. A few days later, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Trump’s remarks on Twitter saying, “President Trump is right. I built a wall along Israel’s southern border. It stopped all illegal immigration. Great success. Great idea.”

Netanyahu’s comments troubled senior officials in Mexico who interpreted his remarks to be defending Trump’s plan to build a wall on the US southern border with Mexico. Netanyahu later attempted to clarify his Tweet and said that he never intended to make a reference to Trump’s plan at all.
