Facebook finally shuts down Hamas pages

In what appears to be a victory for families of Palestinian terror victims, Facebook on Thursday closed dozens of social media pages belonging to the notorious Hamas terror group.

The families of five U.S. citizens injured or murdered by Palestinian terrorists on Monday filed a massive lawsuit against the social media giant for knowingly providing a platform and communication services to Hamas, in violation of U.S. anti-terrorism law, Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Center, representing the plaintiffs, announced on its website.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, seeks compensation and punitive damages for the U.S. victims of five separate terrorist attacks between June 2014 and March 2016. The attacks were all carried out by Hamas, one of the most well-known Palestinian terrorist organizations.

Three days later, Facebook closed dozens of pages belonging to Hamas, including its senior members and affiliates.

In response to the closing of the pages, attorney Nitsana Darshan-Leitner, director of Shurat HaDin, stated, “The closing of these pages is proof that Facebook knows how to and can close and monitor incitement and violence on its site, in spite of its claims, until today, that it is unable to do so.”
